MATERIALS CONSTRUCTION

Grades 9-12
.5 unit

This course requires the construction and repair or remodeling of home furnishings or articles of clothing with a conventional sewing machine and a serger. The abilities, interests and needs of the student will be considered in the selection of the projects. A portfolio of construction samples will also be required. There is no trimester test.



FOODS I

Grades 9-12
.5 unit

Foods I emphasizes the principles of the preparation of foods. It includes the following general areas: safety & sanitation, basic measuring and recipe terms, and the preparation of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, salads, casseroles, breads, cakes and cookies. A textbook is used for daily assignments. Food labs are a part of the class 2 or 3 times per week.



INTERIOR DESIGN

Grades 10-12
.5 unit

This course is designed to help the student analyze housing needs and to provide knowledge useful in making selections for the home. Topics included are house styles, furniture styles, elements and principles of design, furniture arrangement, window treatments, wall treatments, accessories and lighting. Appropriate field trips are part of the course as well as photography and a portfolio project.



CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Grades 10-12
.5 unit

The scope of this course is the study of the human being from conception to age 5. Each age, from birth to 5 years, is divided into physical development, social and emotional development, intellectual development and family interaction. Some of the activities include birth film, hospital visit, classroom and outside observation of children to age 5, preschool observation, and outside readings on related topics.



PARENTING

Grades 11-12
.5 Unit

This course focuses on the dynamics of the family. Topics covered include the decision to parent; effective communication; dual-career families; parent roles and responsibilities; problem solving and parenting styles. Current literature on the family is used, including book by John Rosemond and John and Linda Friel.



BAKERY

Grades 9-12
.5 unit

This course teaches the principles and procedures for preparing baked goods, pastry and desserts. Manual and mathematics skills are developed through running the bakery business.
