PHYSICAL EDUCATION

.25 Unit

Students are required to take physical education every day for one trimester of each year. Classes are basically divided into 9th & 10th PE and 11th & 12th PE.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday classes are held in the fitness room. Students will be doing the National School Fitness Foundation circuit training on the Universal machines and may use the specificity machines and aerobic equipment on these days.

Tuesday and Thursday classes will be used as activity days. What activities are offered will depend on the trimester and the weather. Students will be responsible for participating in class and successfully completing all assignments and tests for any of the activities offered.

Possible activities include:

Target Archery - Covers shooting techniques, safety rules, shooting at targets from 10-30 yards, and scoring.

Canoeing – Canoe rental fee. Only offered in 11th and 12th PE. The course includes canoeing techniques for lake and river canoeing and will include experience on a lake and a river trip if weather allows.

Golf - Students must provide their own clubs. This is a beginning course including the basic swing and the use of irons and woods. Rules and etiquette are stressed. Some course play is included.

Soccer/Speedball –Rules and techniques are taught for teach game. Each game builds on the skills of the other.

Frisbee –Basic throwing and catching techniques are taught. Students participate in games such as Frisbee golf, ultimate Frisbee, and Frisbee football.

Flag Football - Rules and basic techniques are included.

Soccer (Speedball, Speedway) - Rules and techniques are taught for each game. Each game builds on the skills of the other.

Bowling - Each student bowls ten games. Basic instruction is given in technique, rules, terms, and scoring.

Self-Defense - Techniques for personal protection are taught. Includes the use of blows, releases from holds, self-defense strategy, and safety procedures for work, home, and the car.

Team Activities - Activities may include basketball, volleyball, team handball, etc.

Badminton - The course covers the rules and basic techniques.

Cross-Country Skiing - Includes uphill, downhill, and cross-country techniques

Recreational Activities - Activities include table tennis, racquetball, badminton, and deck tennis.

Basketball - Basic skills are taught and instruction is given. Playing time is included.

Volleyball - Rules, skills, and team strategy are covered. Playing time is included.

Roller Skating - The course is offered for five class periods, which include the teaching of basic techniques and free skating time.

Bicycling - Students must provide their own bicycles. Basic skills and safety tips are covered. Periodic maintenance and simple repairs are also taught. The course includes one half-day trip.

Tennis - Students must provide their own rackets. Sessions cover basic rules, strokes and strategies. Includes both singles and doubles play.

Softball - Each student must provide his/her own glove. Basic techniques are taught. Includes playing time.
